 A flashback picks up where the previous episode left off, showing Gray's past as a child. As an eight year old, he is found by Ur and Lyon as the sole survivor of an attack by Deliora. When the coming ice demon reappears two years later, Gray finds himself powerless to stop it and Ur arrives just in time to freeze both herself and the demon before it can attack Lyon again. To keep him from trying to release Ur from her frozen state, Gray lies to him about her death. In the present, Gray's battle with Lyon deepens their mutual resentment as well.

Gray Fullbuster (? ???? Gruy Furubasut?), frequently spelled "Grey", is a Mage of the Fairy Tail Guild, wherein he is a member of Team Natsu. He was trained by Ur as an apprentice alongside Lyon. Gray's most prominent feature is his spiky black-colored hair. He has dark blue eyes, and his body is toned and muscular. After the mission on Galuna Island, he gains a cross-shaped scar on the left side of his abdomen, a result of using Iced Shell.

Ten years before the start of the series, an ice wizard named Ur attacked Lyon's village and killed his parents. Out of revenge, Lyon became Ur's student and endured her wretched training in order to be strong enough to kill her. After killing Ur, Lyon pursued Deliora, whom Ur had revealed as the cause of the destruction of their hometown. Trapped and weakened inside a cave, Deliora was unable to prevent Lyon from piercing its heart with Ur's Extalia. However, as Deliora lay dying, it brought down the cave and trapped them both. Gray found ten-year-old Lyon wandering around in the blizzard outside the cave and took him in after realizing that Lyon had lost his memory due to a head injury.

Natsu and Happy finally return to the guild only to find that Fairy Tail has been left in ruins. After learning from Mirajane and King that Laxus is responsible for the destruction, Natsu rushes off to confront him. Meanwhile, Gray confronts Lyon, who reveals that Ur sacrificed herself to save him. Gajeel returns with Lucy as they realize they have one last chance to save their guild.

At the beginning of the series, Gray is a seventeen-year-old boy who is recklessly searching for Dragon Slayer Magic, a form of Lost Magic with extremely powerful spells revolving around ice-make. He later becomes more focused after Ur gives him this form of magic before "dying", and his personality becomes slightly more serious. According to the anime, he wants to be able to face Lyon so he can destroy Deliora; according to the manga, he wants to avenge Ur's death. Grays attention is easily diverted by nudity or suggestions of nudity, often leading him or others into embarrassing or difficult situations as a result. Gray also gets angry when people fight over such things as their name or clothing.

Gray Rain Fair, is a Mage of the Fairy Tail Guild and the grandson of Ur. He was a victim of the destructive Dragon named Deliora who left only him alive in his village until he was found by Ur. However, after learning that his teacher had killed Ur, Gray defected from Phantom Lord Guildmaster Jose Porla and joined Fairy Tail Guild in the hopes of finding a new source of power.

After picking up the basics of Gray's Ice Magic, Lyon and Gray have a rematch, and once again, Lyon has the advantage. But then, Gray takes things to the next level by pulling off a forbidden move!

The watch continues from the previous episode, where Lyon Vastia uses his Shadow Dragon Slayer Magic to create flaming dragons and project them at Gray. Gray then creates ice shields to protect himself.
