After a little argument between Natsu and Happy, Lucy finds a painting of the Fairy Tail guild that was drawn 6 years ago. She shows it to Mirajane and she explains the story behind it. In a flashback, Natsu finds what he believes is a dragon's egg and Lisanna helps him care for it. But one day the egg disappears and tension rises until Elfman confesses that he took the egg so that he could help them in secret. The egg then hatches into Happy and this reconciles the guild members. Back in the present, Lucy realizes she has never met Lisanna and wonders what happened to her.

After Natsu and Happy argue with each other, Lucy finds a six-year-old painting of the guild that depicts Happy as a dragon. She shows the painting to Mirajane, who tells Lucy the story behind it.

Exiled from the guild's "official" history, Lucy tells Happy to ask Mirajane what happened to her younger sister Lisanna. The story begins with a flashback of young Natsu taking care of what he thinks is a dragon egg, only for it to hatch into a cat. But in his young mind, the sight of this new friend (who he names Happy) made him feel content which was enough for him. His adoptive father Igneel had taught him that life is not always fair but he would be in the worst position if he clamors over ill fortune instead of finding happiness in the small good things around him. Later, Mirajane scolds Natsu and Happy for fighting while Lucy says they argued just like they did in their younger days as shown in cue flashbacks until Lisanna's disappearance is mentioned. This hints that something terrible had happened.

Giggling, Lucy pushes open the door of Fairy Tail's guildhall and steps in with her sword propped on her shoulder. She greets a sleepy Elfman (Mirajane and Lisanna's brother) on the loveseat and smirks as she passes by a grumpy Natsu and Happy bickering, who are unaware of their presence. In the bar area, Lucy flashes Mirajane a winning smile and slams her magic sword, "Horologium", onto the counter. Mirajane gasps at the sight of the sword, mentioning she thought it was a myth. The sword drops down, revealing three keys that look like magic runes to a nearby chest. The keys scramble about behind Lucy, who triumphantly announces to everyone that she is proud to be a part of the strongest guild - Fairy Tail!

Lucy discovers the origin of Happy's species and learns that he was originally an egg, which Natsu found and hatched.

When a young girl named Lucy surpasses her mother's picturesque technique in the making of guild stamps, she becomes curious about her mother's origins. Upon learning that the guild's founding master is a man named Makarov, she sets out to meet him and discover more about Fairy Tail. As she starts her journey to Magnolia Town, she meets Natsu Dragneel, a boy training to become a wizard with his cat-like companion Happy. Natsu reveals that he is searching for his father, who had left him and his cat friend one day without any explanation. Later that night, they run into Happy's old friend Plue and an annual race called the Grand Magic Games: a competition where wizards from various guilds can prove their worth. After learning that the prize for winning the Games is one million jewels and a kiss from his idol Erza Scarlet, Natsu decides to take part alongside Lucy, seeking both wealth and intimacy.

In order to apologize for a fight, Lucy and Natsu decide to buy Happy a new fish companion; however, they wind up buying an entire aquarium shop instead. As they struggle to pay off the debt to their new employer, Everlue, Kanaloa the Kraken appears to attack the city. Natsu defeats the monster with a single punch, earning him and Happy the bounty on Kanaloa's head and finally making up for their mistake.

In the magical land of Fiore, powerful wizards make their living by joining magical guilds and contracting out their services to become "wizards for hire." Harnessing the forces of Dragon Fire, Ice, Weaponry and the Zodiac, four young wizards of the infamous guild Fairy Tail team up to seek their fortunes. Growing stronger with every mission, they travel the countryside helping people and battling rival guilds, but with personalities as different as their magic skills, this team may end up doing more damage than good.

As Natsu, Happy and Lucy get to know each other better, they find themselves becoming lifelong friends through their adventures.

After Natsu and Happy argue with each other, Lucy finds a six-year-old painting of the guild that depicts Happy as a dragon. She shows the painting to Mirajane, who tells Lucy the story behind it.

While Natsu and Happy are arguing, Lucy finds a six-year-old painting of the guild that depicts Happy as a dragon. Mirajane reveals the story behind the painting and how it led to Happy joining the guild.

Natsu and Happy get into another fight, so Lucy goes to Mirajane for advice. There, she finds a picture from six years ago that shows Happy as a dragon. Intrigued, Lucy directs her questions to Mirajane, who tells the whole story of how Happy came to be a member of their guild and how Elfman saved their guild from fragmenting. Meanwhile, back at Fairy Tail Guild Lucy discovers she hasn't met Mirajane's sister yet...

While Lucy catches Happy and Natsu up on Freed Justine and Bickslow, Mirajane recalls the fateful day where she and Elfman entered their S-Class Request.

Mirajane reveals how Happy's egg was a catalyst in bringing the guild back together.
